Never give up!

Never give up!

My Plumeria FINALLY has bloomed. After 2 winters of hard freezes, we did not give up on this plant. Today it FINALLY rewarded us. I also was able to get a great shot of this dragonfly in the process.

Never give up, never stop trying!

These heavenly scented flowers are used traditionally in Hawaiian leis. More info on Plumeria

This visitor stopped by the studio today. It is unusual to get so close to one but I think he was attracted to the bright bloom and heady fragrance of the flower!

My Personal Multies

Unsorted Seaham Sea Glass Multies

Personal Multies

I had so much fun today sorting through my personal collection of English Multicolor Sea Glass.

These pieces are works of art in themselves and I often can get distracted for hours just looking at them and holding them up to the light.

Seaham Multi sea glass is a result of colored glass accidentally getting combined in coloring crucible at an art glass factory. They were then discarded into the local rivers and sea. now they wash up on shorelines surrounding this tiny hamlet in England.

How did they come about?

Well in glass making, raw molten glass is combined with various minerals to achieve different colors. For Instance Cobalt glass uses Oxide Blue-Violet, Chromic Oxide for Emerald Green glass, Gold Chloride for Red. (for more info on glass colors, see http://geology.com/articles/color-in-glass.shtml) A coloring crucible or large vat is used to combine the flowing glass with the coloring agent. It gets built up on the sides, cools and then the crucible is cleaned an "waste" discarded. In this case, into the North Sea.

There are other types of "Art Sea Glass" both from this location and from 2 or 3 others around the world making it precious and rare. The other types of mixed color sea glass from Seaham include Pontil Pieces and flash glass (used in windows in England).

We are proud to be the first artist in American to acquire and work with these unaltered natural sea glass gems and maintain the largest collection outside of the UK. If you would like to see some of our jewelry made from these lovelies, check out our website for English Sea Glass Jewelry.

New Limited Edition Sea Glass Jewelry Pieces

Sea Glass Jewelry in SilverWe are busy this month working on new Limited Edition pieces set in fine and sterling silver. Pictured here is some amazing colorful flat sea glass that we have begun to set in silver. We often do larger pieces as components. This allows for changes in design to be made to the final piece. It also allows us flexibility if one of the pieces is below our standards when complete.

By The Sea Jewelry only offers the finest pieces. If a finished product is not perfect, We tear it down and start over.

You can see this piece when it is done on our Limited Edition pages. There are many already to ship if you don't want to wait!

22 beautiful U.S. beaches

 22 beautiful U.S. beaches - CNN.com

I am sure everyone has their favorite beach. Here are CNN's top 22. Though they missed some of my favorite sandy spots, this is a nice collection of beach locations.

My personal favorite beaches are Ocracoke, South Nags Head, Pea Island on Hatteras Island,Sebastian Inlet Beaches and Siesta Key Beach. All but Siesta beach are remarkably not overdeveloped. These beaches either restrict building heights or are mostly wild with an abundance of sea oats, sea glass and pure heaven!.

I guess I like the uncrowded areas as walking on the beach to me is a solitary pastime. Even if there is no sea glass to be found, the silence and serene beauty of an unpopulated beach is like going to church.

Sea Glass Colors - Ruby Red

Ruby Red Sea Glass
1 in 5000 pieces

Red is the hope diamond of sea glass and will make any sea glass lovers day, week or year.

One of the most common sources for ruby red glass was made by Anchor Hocking Glass Corporation for both decorative household items (shown left) and in the 1950's Schlitz Beer bottle (bottle bottom pictured below with sea glass pieces).

Anchor Hocking discovered a way to use copper to turn glass a red hue instead of the traditional gold, making the cost of producing this glass much more commercially feasible.  While Ruby Red glass has been made throughout history, Anchor hocking found a way to produce it much cheaper and available to the public.

Ruby and red glass using gold (instead of copper) dates back to the 1600's and later became known as the "Purple of Cassius." The high price which this glass commanded and the efforts needed to produce it could hardly be justified by its beauty, but the mysticism connected with gold caused the demand.

However, the Romans made gold ruby glass long before then. The famous Lycurgus Cup (pictured below), made in the 4th Century AD., contains both gold and silver. An exceptional example of the glass-making skills of the Romans, it now rests in the British Museum in London.

The secret of making red glass, lost for many centuries, wasn’t rediscovered until the 17th Century by a chemist from a glass-making family.

While we have many pieces of Ruby Sea Glass in our collection, the Royal Ruby by Anchor Hocking is more available. Some of the jewelry pieces we have using both Royal Ruby and Ruby Reds can be found on our site.

Sea Glass Is For Lovers!

White sea glass heart necklace
Green Sea Glass Heart
Sea Glass is for Lovers.....

We have been busy the last few weeks creating new sea glass jewelry for Valentines day.

Some of the pieces we have added are natural unaltered sea glass pieces in the shape of a heart.

Pictured right is a green sea glass heart set in fine sterling and silver. The heart cut out from the back of the silver backplate emphasizes the heart even more!

This piece is available on our site today, but these unique pieces tend to sell quickly.

Heart shaped sea glass is an unusual find. Though many sea glass shards are found in a triangular shape, the heart pieces are much rarer.

Blue Heart - Now Online

How is the heart shape formed naturally?

Sea Glass Heart Pieces
Hearts
If you have ever broken a bottle or window, remember how the point of impact radiated out through the glass. This is the origin of the triangular shape that much sea glass has. The formation of a heart shaped piece is totally random, and is where part of the top gets chipped out them smoothed by the sea.

Perfect Sea Glass Hearts
Since we do not alter our sea glass in anyway, it can take going through 1000's of pieces of sea glass to find a single heart. Some heart pieces need a bit of imagination to see the heart shape, while others are very distinct.

Below are some other sea glass heart shaped pieces I have done that have already sold.
